JAKA PUMKU rock climbing

Located in the community of La Rinconada, Angochagua, Ibarra canton, the Jaka Pumku rock (Rock Gate) is developed as a highly valuable proposition within community tourism with several options especially for those seeking extreme experiences. One of these proposals is sport climbing. The opening of the climbing park takes place in 2019 and has a camping area, bathroom, parking, cabins, space to secure equipment.

Rock Characteristics

The highest route is 30 meters high. The type of rock is porous andesite, which favors fast drying when it rains, on the other hand, this type of rock improves adherence to hands and feet.

It is possible to perform multi-lengths, preferably for sports training. It is very important to have previous knowledge in climbing before practicing on the rock since it has routes of different levels of difficulty. (See climbing points, annexes)

It is necessary to bear in mind the basic safety rules before starting to climb, therefore, the helmet will always be essential at the time of the ascent, since in Jaka Pumku there is rock fall and it has happened several times in which the helmet has saved many lives here.

Community of La Rinconada

Don Héctor Farinango, owner of the area, has lived his 46 years in the community of La Rinconada, he comments that the evolution and development of La Rinconada has been gigantic, from the road infrastructure, the houses and of course the people, however, part of that change has made environmental awareness no longer alive.

The community has a large number of natural tourist attractions including waterfalls, rivers, trekking areas among others, which diversify the offer for all visitors. Traditional food can be prepared by the community members themselves.

Something very important to note is that you enter into a total connection with nature since there is no cell phone signal.

How to get:

By car:

From the center of the city we must go out Atahualpa avenue in the direction of La Esperanza.

Throughout the journey there are tourist signs (made of wood) that will guide us to La Rinconada. The road leads to Zuleta, but as a reference in the first part of the way from Ibarra we must follow the signs that lead to the military barracks called Yahuachi. Once in it, we continue along the road towards Zuleta until we find the (wooden) sign that will make us deviate until the entrance of La Rinconada. Once we come across this sign, we leave the main road and go down a secondary road for 3 minutes to a bridge. There we can park the vehicles.

By Bus:

Buses leave for Zuleta every 30 minutes from a secondary terminal that will leave us at the detour that shows the photo of the (wooden) sign. The walk from here to the bridge is approximately 15 to 20 minutes. A one-way and one return bus leaves every day that leaves us at the bridge and arrives at La Rinconada. In the morning it leaves Ibarra at 8:30 am and goes over the bridge back to Ibarra at 4:00 am. Before passing the bridge there is a path to the right that passes by the house of the owners of the land and they will charge us $ 0.50 as long as we do not carry out activities that damage the crops or animals, we will be received with great kindness by the residents.

What to bring:

This sector has clearly sporty routes of difficulty, but in ¨PODER O2¨ an inverted crack has been respected for the use of anchors.

The tracks are equipped with parabolts, with a maximum of 14 quickdraws.

It is advisable to wear a helmet because there is not yet a large traffic of climbers, so stones can still fall. It is necessary to bring drinking water for the whole day and food.
